A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Steve is a member of the boards of trustees of the Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, and the University of Missouri – Kansas City.  He also serves as co-chair of the Kansas City Area Development Council, as chairman of the EPIC Entertainment board of directors and on the board of directors of the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce

He and his wife, Cathy, have chaired the connections council at St. John’s United Methodist church and led numerous fundraising events for charitable organizations.  They live in Kansas City, Missouri with two energetic wheaten terriers, Finn and Lili.

Ty Henson

Ty Henson serves as Division General Counsel for JE Dunn in the Risk Management department.  Ty advises Dunn’s risk group on a holistic approach to insurance, bond, safety, quality, and claims matters.  Ty is also the company’s Federal Compliance Officer for ethics and compliance issues.  Lastly, Ty acts as a national crisis commander, the national records manager, and the security and privacy officer for Dunn.

In the community, Ty is the current Board President of Kansas City B-cycle, KC’s revolutionary new bike sharing system.  Ty helped steer the establishment of that nonprofit, as well as a sister organization, BikeWalkKC, which promotes the advancement of pedestrian/cycling issues for kids and adults through advocacy, education, and programming.  Ty is also a member of the Grants Committee of ImpactKC, a local philanthropic giving organization.  A graduate of the Centurions Leadership Program, Ty has been continually involved in civic and charitable endeavors since he moved here nine years ago.

Ty’s roles – especially charitable – have the greatest value to him because of his family.  He and his wife, Amy, live in Leawood with their three children and aim to do their part to make the community a place where children can thrive.

Gillis Volunteer of the Year

Jill Perfect

Some people feel the words "teen-aged boy" are scarier than words like "mugger" or "hurricane." We have wonderful, valuable volunteers who work with the little guys in West Cottage or the toddlers in the Gillis Children’s Shelter but tremble at the thought of those teenagers in south. What a welcome day it was when Jill Perfect came to Gillis and said, "I have a heart for teens."

Soon her partnership led her to form the Ask A Mentor program. The idea behind the program is simple- just share your time and let the kids know you care. The mentors and the boys get together a couple of times a month. One time they go to church and out to lunch. "It is such a blessing to share this time as we eat and get to know one another. " Another time the group comes and Gillis does a fun activity with the boys. Because of the time shared many meaningful relationships have been formed. Jill still has regular contact with one of the boys that attended the first ever Ask A Mentor.

Each year we struggle to get enough Halloween costumes for the kids to wear to our annual Trunk or Treat event. Jill applied her warrior spirit to that problem too. She helped organize the Halloween Shop this year and has already offered to take it over next year.

Many boys at Gillis have missed a lot of school because of foster care shuffling or suspensions related to their emotional problems. Jill’s work along with last year’s recipient, Rhonda Meyer, in the Gillis Reading Buddies program battles that problem too. Gillis teachers say that Reading Buddies works so well because of the "buddies" part. It’s not just about learning HOW to read, but WANTING to read so they can be with people like Jill.

The nomination letter for Jill read: "She has the heart of a warrior who is willing to go to battle, yet comes to the battle with a kind heart and kind spirit." That metaphor almost perfectly sums up her work. The only thing Gillis would add, is that not only does she go to battle with those weapons, kind heart and kind spirit, but she WINS the battles too.
